History
Modoc County was formed inside 1855 from parts of Siskiyou County.
A county derives its title from either a Modoc tribe which lived at the Pit River headwaters. A single historiographer suggests that a word modoc means "the head of the river." A second states that a word is from either a Klamath word moatakni meaning "southerners," i.e., a humans dwelling south of the Klamath tribe.
